DESCRIPTION - "I didn't know at the time that my first Rolling Stone Magazine assignment photographing Tom Waits would be one of the most memorable photo sessions of my career. Arriving at the Tropicana Hotel in West Hollywood in 1977 where Tom Waits lived in a little bungalow in the back...a very crowded and congested space. I didn't know much about Tom at the time but not before too long I knew that this was not going to be easy to pull off. A little nervous to say the least armed with my Nikon F camera and some assorted lenses."

Waits5a-Thumb Spacer "Tom Waits: A Photo Session With Mitchell Rose provides a unique glimpse into the time Tom Waits spent as a permanent resident at the infamous Tropicana Motel in West Hollywood. By 1977, Waits had immersed himself in the world of sleaze and excess he was writing about. Waits sits on a lawn chair in his cluttered bungalow, surrounded by empty bottles and cigarette butts atop piles of records, magazines, books and cardboard boxes. Other portraits show Waits playing the dusty piano where he composed in his kitchen, having sawn off the draining board to make room. Throughout this remarkable book, Mitchell Rose shares previously unpublished photographs from what he describes as the most memorable photo session of his career."

"Just finished my tour of my copy of Mitchell Rose's Tom Waits book...a collection of extraordinary and intimate photographs. All the pics are from the formative era...circa 1977. Mitchell has captured an intimacy and a kind of quiet in these very large prints. Waits comes across as his own man, and carries an intensity and purpose in his gaze. His apartment at the Tropicana is a sea of derelict papers and random collectibles. In this edition you can even make out the names of the books in his living room and one catches your eye...2000 More Insults. Sounds like weaponry for the club mill. It doesn't seem like Tom ever really moved in to the Tropicana, even though he stayed about two years. But even after two years it looks like he just arrived, parked his stuff, and started woodshedding. One gets the feeling from these shots that it's early in the day for the man...the wrinkle of dawn is still around his eyes. TIme to get a breakfast beer. The mix of black and white and color takes you back to a different time...when the days were young with possibility, and the nights never stopped. My favorite part of the book is studying Tom's hands hovering at the piano. This is magic time for me.  Thanks for making this book, Mitchell....it's just the dose of Blue Ruin I've been needing!"

Waits7a-Thumb Spacer "Just like great music doesn't necessarily come from great instruments, so it is with Mitchell Rose. Great photos don't necessarily come from his great camera but from the great photographer that he is. Mitchell Rose snags the soul of one of the greatest living musicians of our day, Tom Waits. I'm so glad I have a copy of this book and I recommend it to fans of Tom Waits and fans of Mitchell Rose, two artists from two fields in a perfect match."

"These images are so natural, yet so iconic. This is the hippest book in my collection."
Kitty K - Spokane, WA

I've seen all three versions of the book up close and personal. They are simply beautiful. Mitchell's photos offer great insight into Waits at such an important stage of his early career. And the big book, in particular, is AMAZING... really a must-have for a big fan or any rock history collector. I also can't wait for Mr. Rose to make some of his other rock photos available.
Rob K - Los Angeles, CA

"Mitchell Rose is a true artist at heart and in spirit. His technical proficiency allows for the muses to truly enter, delivering emotion, moods and compositions - communicating the essence of the moment. Mitchell's  work speaks for itself, but it is rare to meet such a great artist who maintains the ethics and morals of truth through his work. Mitchell's book on Tom Waits is one of these rare gems that we should cherish for generations to come."
Robert Patrik Winston

"What an exquisite marriage between photography and music.  Mitchell Rose has captured Tom Waits in such a way that not only do we see the soul of his subject but we are drawn in to and feel a part of the moments in time he has captured and shared.  A beautiful, honest, raw book I highly recommend!"
